Honour your parents

by admin on Oct.04, 2009, under Your Praises

Have you ever got frustrated with your naggy parents? Always breathing down your neck as if they are watching your every movements? Angry with them for prying or for not understanding you well enough?

But how is it that they never feel the same way about you?

Parents, they are our wonderful gift from God. In the book of Deuteronomy, God made it abundantly clear: Honour your parents.

“Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12 NRSV)

“Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 5:16 NRSV)

“You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.”
(Leviticus 19:3 NRSV)

Of course, a commandment is never easy to follow. But look at it from another angle. Can you imagine one day when you parents are no longer with you? This will eventually happen but just like how you tell yourself to treat each day like your last, to make the most out of it.. have you ever wondered if today is the last day your parent will be with you?

Live everyday as if it is your last, and live everyday as if it is the last day of your loved ones.. of course, there is no need to be so pessimistic but sometimes, this thought may leave you valuing your loved ones more. Such that eventually if such a day comes, you can tell yourself that you have really fond memories of your time together.

So talk nicely to your parents if they are nagging. They love you, and will want you to be happy.
